New Schwing Bioset Biosolids Cake Pumps Improve Flow Control

Citizens Energy Group operates the Belmont Advanced Wastewater treatment plant for the City of Indianapolis which treats a peak flow of over 300 million gallons per day. The biosolids are dewatered by centrifuges to a cake dryness of up to 30% solids content and pumped to incineration. The existing Schwing Bioset piston pumps had been in service for over 15 years and were approaching the end of their service life.

Citizens Energy surveyed the market for pumping methods that could also be considered to replace the existing pumps. After exploring several technologies, it was clear the Schwing Bioset piston pumps remained the best technology to meet the challenging pressure and flow requirements, while keeping the low maintenance requirements they were accustomed to. This decision was backed up by decades of experience at the Belmont Wastewater Treatment plant with similar Schwing Bioset piston pumps.

New Piston Pumps from Schwing Bioset were chosen as the best solution and were the sole sourced provider for the new cake pumping

system. The new model KSP45 pumps will transport cake with dry solids content as high as 30% solids to the required incinerator feed ports. As a result of the increased automation and improved flow control, the new pumps will additionally reduce the amount of attention required by plant staff.
