The wastewater treatment plant in Waupun, WI, was unable to meet new phosphorous discharge limits enacted by the US EPA and WI DNR in its previous state. The city hired a consulting engineer to perform a study to evaluate options to bring the plant into compliance with the new regulations.
An Advanced Biological Nutrient Recovery process was constructed to remove nutrients through algae growth. The harvested algae would be further processed by a dryer to produce granulate for beneficial reuse. Central to the process is a sliding frame storage system supplied by Schwing Bioset, Inc., to bridge the process gap between algae and dryer operations. The custom designed bin for storing dewatered algae includes proven sliding frame technology, and the bin features vertical sidewalls to avoid bridging of sticky materials, while also maximizing storage volume with limited height. The sliding frame feeds residual algae to a pump that feeds the dryer on its operating schedule.
By providing the intermediate storage system, the Waupun WWTP is able to operate its algae process continuously and operate their dryer on a schedule that supports the rate of algae production. The low maintenance sliding frame provides the buffering storage needed in a compact process that is fully integrated into the plant SCADA, and doesn’t require any additional operators or maintenance staff.
