In the world of wastewater treatment, efficiency and reliability are paramount, and the wastewater treatment plant in Appleton, WI, faced a critical challenge: expanding their biosolids storage facility with new belt conveyor system, but without interrupting daily operations. Schwing Bioset rose to the occasion, delivering a state-of-the-art solution that ensured the plant continued to function during the upgrade.
The Appleton wastewater treatment plant continues to grow and currently handles over 20,000 tons of Biosolids per year. Historically, a belt conveyor system distributed biosolids within the existing barn for storage, prior to being beneficially reused. Due to the increasing volume of biosolids, the storage barn was in need of expansion, and moving this volume of biosolids every year requires a robust and reliable conveyor system. The existing Custom Conveyor belt conveyors that were installed in 1990 were also replaced at the same time the overall system was extended to reach the new storage area.
Schwing Bioset’s Custom Conveyor division, a leader in designing and manufacturing conveyor systems, was selected for this critical task. The company’s reputation for delivering high-quality, durable, and efficient conveyor systems made them the ideal partner for this project.
Schwing Bioset provided new belt conveyors equipped with the latest technology and durable components designed to withstand the rigorous demands of biosolids handling. The new systems featured:
- High-Performance Belts: Engineered for maximum durability and minimal maintenance, ensuring long-term reliability.
- Enhanced Components: Upgraded rollers, bearings, and motors to improve efficiency and reduce downtime.
- Modular Design: Facilitated quicker installation and easy maintenance.
One of the most significant challenges was maintaining plant operations throughout the upgrade, requiring meticulous planning and execution, and our team worked closely with plant management to devise a strategy that minimized disruptions.
- Detailed Planning: The team conducted thorough site assessments and developed a step-by-step installation plan to ensure seamless integration.
- Phased Installation: The installation was executed in phases, allowing sections of the plant to remain operational while others were upgraded.
- Round-the-Clock Work: To adhere to the tight schedule, installation teams worked in shifts, ensuring continuous progress without compromising on quality or safety.
The successful installation of the new belt conveyors has significantly improved the capacity and operational flexibility of the Appleton wastewater treatment plant’s biosolids storage facility. The new system will improve efficiency and allow continued growth, while at the same time reducing downtime due to unplanned outages from the original aging system.
